Alaska Fishing

Steelhead Trout

Alaska Steelhead

Alaska steelhead fishing can be phenomenal

Alaska steelies are a popular fish on the Kenai PeninsulaSteelhead trout are intense fighters, which makes them a prized sportfish. Steelhead are rainbow trout that migrate to sea (anadromous). Like Pacific salmon, steelhead spawn and rear in freshwaters. They migrate to sea for a variable number of years before returning to freshwater to spawn. Unlike Pacific salmon, however, steelhead may not die after spawning.

Season: Several rivers toward Homer also host runs of steelhead during the fall including Anchor River, Ninilchik River, Deep Creek, Stariski Creek, and several other streams along the coast. Call or write for details.

Average Sizes and Records

  • Steelhead average about 10 to 14 lbs.
  • State Record, 42 lb., 2 oz., Bell Island, 1970
